Business, Building & Development

Lloydminster has long been recognized as a perennial economic powerhouse with strong ties to both the petroleum and agricultural sectors.

Situated directly between Edmonton and Saskatoon, Lloydminster has an estimated trade area of 130,000 to 150,000 people and is a regional service hub with a workforce of 70,000 within an hour's commute. Located on the TransCanada Yellowhead Highway and Highway 17, Lloydminster is well connected. The Lloydminster Airport is capable of landing a Boeing 737-200. Lloydminster is one of only five communities in Alberta with access to both CN and CP Rail.

The Heavy Oil Capital

Lloydminster holds a place of economic distinction as the ‘Heavy oil Capital of the World.' Heavy oil production has been an economic driver of the Lloydminster region for decades. Two significant facilities in the Lloydminster region are Cenovus Energy’s Lloydminster Refinery, located in the City of Lloydminster, and the Lloydminster Upgrader located in the neighbouring Rural Municipality of Wilton. The majority of Husky's heavy oil assets are located in the Lloydminster region of Alberta and Saskatchewan, where it holds approximately two million acres.

Deep Roots in Agriculture

Since the pioneer days, the agriculture industry has been a cornerstone of our region's economy. Wheat, barley and canola typically account for more than 30 per cent of the total acreage sown in the Lloydminster area. Home to one of Canada's largest canola crushing facilities and Canada's largest bio-diesel plant, Lloydminster has long been a manufacturing and value-added destination for the agriculture and oil industries.

Comfort and Hospitality

Stores and services are easily accessible often within only a seven-minute drive. With over 1,400 hotel and motel rooms and a wide range of facilities and parks Lloydminster is also recognized as an event and meeting destination. In recent years, Lloydminster has welcomed popular stores including Best Buy, Home Depot, HomeSense and Rona; to name a few. These retailers conduct extensive due diligence and their research shows that Lloydminster is a community on the move, providing excellent long-term potential.
