Scam and Fraud Prevention Lunch & Learn

Fraud is the fastest growing crime in Canada. In 2023 alone, Canadians lost a staggering $567 million due to theft.

It can be difficult to stay on top of the latest schemes. Fraudsters are technologically savvy and convincing, tempting you online, on your phone, in your mailbox and at your door.

Through the Lunch & Learn event on March 24, attendees will learn to:

  • spot scams and red flags before becoming a victim
  • understand the steps to take if you become victimized
  • understand fraud tactics
  • learn through real-life stories and personal accounts.

Awareness is your best defence- stay informed, and stay safe.

Who is the facilitator?

Julie Matthews was an Investigative TV reporter for 19 years including 10 years as Global TV Edmonton’s Troubleshooter where she solved problems for many Albertans. Her very first TV role though was in Lloydminster at CKSA TV doing morning radio newscasts and eventually anchoring the 11 pm newscast.

After her time at Global News Edmonton, she traded her microphone for a badge, becoming a peace officer and senior investigator with the Government of Alberta’s Consumer Investigations Unit.

She now has her own consulting business touring around Alberta educating seniors, businesses and community groups about how to spot the latest frauds and scams. This consumer protection expert is passionate about fraud prevention especially in rural areas.

She is a certified fraud examiner and co-chair of the Alberta Fraud Prevention Month committee.  She has a weekly segment on CFCW radio called “Scam Alert” which airs every Thursday. A self proclaimed “Fraud Nerd” you can also find her sharing her latest scam stories and fraud prevention videos across social media.

She has been recognized with numerous awards for her efforts to protect Albertans including the Alberta Consumer Champion Award and Solicitor General and Public Security Crime Prevention Award.
