Bench Dedications
About the Program
The Bench Dedication Program allows people to memorialize loved ones or celebrate important events by affixing a dedication plaque on a bench in City parks and green spaces.
Applications to install a new bench at a new location or an existing location are accepted.
Applications to install a bench in a new location are extremely limited and will only be considered in cases where significant needs within the park space can be demonstrated.
The type of benches and associated costs vary by location.
Please contact the Parks and Green Spaces department to learn about the parks that have benches available for dedication.
Apply today using the online bench dedication application form. The form is also printer-friendly and can be mailed or emailed to the Parks and Green Spaces department.
For more information about the Bench Dedication Program, please review the frequently asked questions below. Alternatively, the Bench Dedication Program Policy is available online at Lloydminster.ca/policies.
Program Guidelines
- Dedications may be to commemorate one or more Persons for their past or present contribution to the community, to a service club project, in memoriam, as well as for other special events.
- A maximum of two plaques per bench are permitted. Costs associated with the production/installation of a second plaque will be the responsibility of the donor.
- The plaque size, font and design specifications are determined by the City. Text is subject to approval by the City.
- A plaque that reads “Donated by a Friend of the City of Lloydminster” will identify benches donated anonymously. The term for this plaque is also 10 years.
- Plaques will be displayed for a 10-year period from the date of installation. Afterwards, Donors can request the plaque be returned to them.
- No logos of any kind are permitted on plaques.
- The dedication plaque is not intended to serve as a memorial marker; birth and/or death dates are not permitted. Messages should be simple statements recalling the event or person(s) recognized. All statements are at the discretion of the City.
- The City is responsible for the purchase and installation of all benches. Benches purchased and installed will be of high quality related to the style, appearance, durability and ease of maintenance.
- Not all benches located in the City may be considered for dedication.
How do I apply for a bench dedication?
What are the associated costs?
The costs associated with the bench dedication program vary depending on the park and the available styles of benches.
How do I request for a new bench to be installed in a new location?
Donors may request an area for a new bench to be installed. The City then consults with planners and operations staff to find a suitable location within your requested area.
Why aren't benches available at all City parks?
Benches may only be installed on City parks and green spaces. Some parks and spaces spaces containing a high number of existing benches will not be eligible for additional new benches to be installed. However, these parks may have existing benches available for dedication.
How long will me dedication plaque be displayed on the bench?
The dedication term for a plaque is 10 years from the date of installation of the bench plaque or the useful life of the bench, whichever comes first. Within this time, the dedicated bench will be maintained by the City in its original location, or in an area near its original location.
What happens to my plaque after the term?
Notice may be sent to the Donor at the end of the dedication term to determine whether the Donor would like the plaque returned. The Donor is responsible to update the City on any change of address so that such contact can be made.
I won't be sewing my dedication term. How can I get my plaque?
At the end of the dedication term, the plaque will be removed to allow for other dedications and/or bench removal or replacement. The Donor may request to have the plaque returned to them by contacting:
City of Lloydminster
Parks and Green Spaces
6623 52 Street
Lloydminster, AB T9V 3T8

What does my dedication fee cover?
The dedication fee covers the purchase, installation, maintenance and administrative costs of approved bench and plaques, whether new or existing. The dedication fee is based on the average cost for purchase, installation and maintenance by City resources of a standard bench for a 10-year period or the useful life of the bench, whichever comes first.
Bench dedications are tax deductible and an official receipt will be issued by the City.
My dedication plaque was vandalized or stolen. What should I do?
If a bench is damaged, defaced or destroyed to an extent that, in the opinion of Administration, replacement is required, this will be done at no cost to the Donor.
In the event there is recurrent vandalism, the City reserves the right to relocate a bench or plaque, in the eventuality that such a move is necessary (i.e. bench is subject to recurrent vandalism, the public lands are scheduled for redevelopment,
servicing upgrades etc.). The City will attempt to contact the Donor for consultation before relocating the bench.
How can I pay for my dedication plaque/bench?
The donation can be made via cash, cheque, money order, debit or credit card. Once the City and Donor have finalized all details of the plaque and dedication, an invoice will be sent to the donor with payment information. Payment in full is required before bench and plaque installation.
Will I get a refund if I change my mind after payment?
The City will refund the payment if the Donor cancels their application on or before 14 days after the day on which their payment was received by the City.
How long does it take for the plaque and/or bench to be installed?
Each request is unique and installation times may vary. Requests for new benches will require more time to process. Please contact the Parks and Green Spaces department for more details on the installation timelines specific to your request.
Typically, bench and plaque installations will only occur between May and October. Benches and plaques are installed in the order the requests are received. The City may not be able to install the plaque in the first May to October period after approval of an application due to constraints such as workforce capacity and inclement weather.
What kind of regular maintenance is conducted for dedication benches?
Maintenance for benches includes:
- Inspection, repair/refurbishment and/or replacement of bench materials as required
- Repair, refurbishment and/or replacement of the dedication plaque as required
- Repair and refurbishment resulting from acts of vandalism, as required
Maintenance for benches does not include:
- Site maintenance such as snow removal, grass maintenance and upkeep of the overall park/green space
- Bench cleaning to remove dust, dirt or surrounding debris
- Any additional staining to change, darken or enrich the coating colour or shade
Donors can report such incidents to the City by calling the Parks and Green Spaces department.
