UPDATE: 52 Street Closure Following Asphalt Spill
Lloydminster, AB/SK –
UPDATE: July 22, 2024 - 2:21 p.m.
Cleanup and remediation work on 52 Street between 50 Avenue and 62 Avenue will continue into mid-August following an asphalt spill from an industrial vehicle.
The roadway has been closed since July 14 while crews worked to mitigate environmental damages and remove contaminated material from the site. Multiple attempts at cleaning the roadway and curb systems have been only partially effective, requiring replacement of the impacted infrastructure.
“Throughout this response, the focus has been protecting environment and infrastructure, and ensuring the site is restored to pre-incident condition. We appreciate the hard work being conducted on site and recognize a cleanup of this complexity takes time,” said Andrew DeGruchy, Manager of Emergency Management for the City of Lloydminster. “Given the limited success of the cleanup attempts, it has been decided the best course of action is to replace the affected infrastructure, which will require prolonged traffic disruption in the area.”
The millwork will take approximately 25 days to complete and will require intermittent lane restrictions on 52 Street throughout the work period.
A detour route has been established and traffic signage is in place. Motorists are advised to plan alternate traffic routes until further notice.
All work related to the cleanup and remediation is funded by those responsible for the incident.
