Senior Taxi Program voucher price to increase January 1, 2025

Lloydminster, AB/SK - Effective January 1, 2025, the price of Senior Taxi Program vouchers will increase from $5.00 to $5.50 per voucher. This adjustment follows a comprehensive review of the program’s costs and current operational trends.

The Senior Taxi Program has been a vital service in Lloydminster for over 40 years, initially established by the Lloydminster Seniors Citizen Society (LSCS), a senior-led non-profit. The program aims to address seniors' transportation needs with financial support from the City of Lloydminster. In 2017, the LSCS requested the City take over the program's administration due to a shortage of volunteers. Since then, the City has expanded the number of voucher purchase locations from 3 to 13 and included Border City Connects as an additional service provider.

The program encourages seniors to live active and connected lifestyles by offering accessible and affordable transportation. This service helps maintain seniors’ independence and supports their social engagement within the community.

  • Vouchers can be purchased by seniors and exchanged with taxi drivers for one-way trips within Lloydminster city limits.
  • Taxi companies invoice the City for the fare, and the City subsidizes the difference.
• Growth:
  • In 2019, the program served 250 seniors, rising to 500 seniors in 2024
  • Voucher sales increased from 21,268 in 2019 to 26,942 in 2023.
  • The average cost per ride rose from $9.28 in 2019 to $12.50 in 2023.
• Financial Impact:
  • In 2023, the City sold 26,942 vouchers, generating $134,710 in revenue.
  • Expenses for redeemed vouchers totalled $280,534, resulting in a net subsidy of $145,828—up from $60,478 in 2019.

To ensure the program’s sustainability, City Council approved the $0.50 voucher price increase. Vouchers will remain available for purchase at 13 locations and can be redeemed with local taxi providers.
