Opening of outdoor ice surfaces dependent on weather conditions
Lloydminster, AB/SK - Outdoor rinks in Lloydminster will open as soon as freezing temperatures allow for safe ice surfaces.
This year, the City of Lloydminster will have nine ice surfaces across the community at the following locations:
- Bishop Lloyd Middle School - 5524 31 Street
- Bud Miller All Seasons Park Lake (lights) - 2902 59 Avenue
- E.S. Laird Middle School (lights) - 4808 45 Avenue
- Jack Kemp Community School (lights) - 3701 47 Avenue
- Ken Baker Park (lights) - 4713 57 Avenue
- Queen Elizabeth School - 5512 51 Avenue
- Robertson Park (lights) - 5105 34 Street
- Servus Sports Centre Speedskating Oval (lights) - 5202 12 Street
- St. Mary’s Elementary School (lights) - 5207 42 Street
- Winston Churchill Elementary School (lights) - 4402 27 Street
City-maintained outdoor ice surfaces are free to use, and snow clearing is completed regularly to maintain the quality of each surface. Nighttime lights on indicated surfaces will remain on until 10:00 p.m. daily once operational.
Priority will be given to opening the Servus Sports Centre Speedskating Oval and the rink at Bud Miller All Seasons Park. Once these rinks are operational, the remaining surfaces will follow as weather conditions permit.
Weather permitting, outdoor ice surfaces remain open daily during the winter season. Closed signage will be posted at rinks that are not suitable for use due to weather or ice conditions. For safety, helmets are strongly recommended for skaters of all ages.
Servus Free Skate
While the weather determines the opening of outdoor rinks, Servus Credit Union continues to offer free access to indoor ice surfaces across the city. Dates and times vary by facility. For more information, including the full schedule, visit Lloydminster.ca/ServusSkate.
Stormwater Retention Ponds
The City reminds residents to remain clear of stormwater retention ponds this winter. Although the water’s surface may appear frozen, continual water movement and fluctuating water levels contribute to potential dangers. The rise and fall of outdoor temperatures also create unstable ice surfaces. Ice thickness on retention ponds is not monitored except for the Bud Miller All Seasons Park lake.
If someone falls through the ice, do not attempt a rescue by going onto the ice. Call 911 immediately for help.
As conditions change, we will provide further updates.
