Lloydminster Fire Dept. receives thermal imaging equipment donation from Cenovus Energy

Lloydminster, AB/SK – The Lloydminster Fire Department received 18 thermal imaging units from Cenovus Energy, a donation that will elevate firefighting capabilities and bolster the safety of the community.

Thermal imaging technology has transformed firefighting practices, empowering first responders to effectively maneuver through hazardous situations and identify potential risks instantaneously. The newly acquired thermal imaging equipment will provide:

  1. enhanced situational awareness: With thermal imaging, firefighters can swiftly identify hotspots, locate trapped individuals and assess the overall fire dynamics. This technology ensures every corner is examined, increasing efficiency and reducing response time.
  2. early detection: Thermal imaging equipment assists in detecting hidden fires, preventing potential re-ignition and significantly reducing the risk of smouldering fires that might otherwise go undetected. This proactive approach enhances the safety of firefighters and residents.
  3. search and rescue precision: When seconds matter, thermal imaging provides an edge in locating individuals in distress, including those trapped or incapacitated due to smoke inhalation. This capability improves search and rescue operations and maximizes the chances of successful outcomes.
  4. effective decision-making: Equipped with thermal imaging, incident commanders can make well-informed decisions based on real-time information about the fire's behaviour and spread. This leads to more effective deployment of resources and improved safety for both firefighters and residents.

Of the units received, two are the larger AttackPRO handheld units, which are designed to help combat large-scale fires when safe, critical decisions need to be made promptly by a captain or fire chief. The remaining FirePRO 300 units are lightweight thermal cameras intended for everyday situational awareness. Both units will also be an available resource during fire investigations.
