During heat waves, buildings with no indoor cooling systems will continue to get hotter with each passing day, increasing health-related risks. Heat waves can also increase our risk of wildfires and lead to water and power outages.

Monitor the weather and prepare for extreme heat by:

  • Making a plan that considers the unique needs of your household, such as a backup plan for power outages if you rely on an elevator or have reduced mobility.
  • Identifying family, friends and nearby community members who are at higher risk of heat illness and setting up a ‘Heat buddy' system.
  • Preparing a list of the nearest air-conditioned spaces or cooling centres that can accommodate your needs (e.g. wheelchair accessible, children’s activities, pet friendly).
  • Here are a few facilities that are open daily. Please check individual facilities for hours of operation:
    • Bioclean Aquatic Centre (2902 59 Avenue)
    • Servus Sports Centre (5202 12 Street)
    • Lloydminster Public Library (LloydMall)
  • Turning on your AC early in the day improves energy efficiency, is more likely to protect you and reduces demand on the electrical grid during afternoon peaks.
