Downtown construction: Update 13

Lloydminster, AB/SK – Business and sidewalk access is not expected to be interrupted as crews are scheduled to return to Downtown Lloydminster to complete the remaining public-facing work to enhance the urban landscape and overall functionality of key areas within the city centre.

Scheduled to begin Monday, May 6, 2024, the upcoming work focuses on landscaping and installation of street furnishings such as benches, implementing concrete crosswalks at the intersection of 50 Avenue and 50 Street and finalizing the pigmented concrete installations. These enhancements are designed to improve pedestrian safety and accessibility and elevate the area's aesthetic appeal.

Road closures will be implemented in specific areas to facilitate the necessary construction activities. Beginning May 6, 2024, road closures will affect the intersection of 50 Avenue and 50 Street, and 50 Street between 49 Avenue and 50 Avenue. These closures are essential to ensure the public and contractors' safety and expedite project completion.

While complete road closures will be implemented initially, the City aims to swiftly restore traffic flow upon the approval of concrete crosswalks for public use.

The closure of 50 Street is projected to be completed by Saturday, June 8, 2024, weather pending, coinciding with Streetfest. Although work will continue beyond this date, efforts are focused on achieving significant milestones by the target date.

Throughout spring construction, the sidewalks will remain accessible, ensuring uninterrupted access to businesses for patrons and visitors.

Downtown Parking & Navigation

Detour and local traffic-only signs will be placed throughout the area to show traffic and visitors how to access properties while avoiding the construction site. Until the end of the construction period, no parking or pedestrian access will be permitted in the work zone. Emergency access will be maintained to all affected businesses at all times through alternate routes.

Project Scope

In 2023, the program replaced and upgraded underground municipal infrastructure throughout the downtown core to maintain the serviceability and longevity of the city’s underground systems. Above ground, passersby saw the removal and reconstruction of the roadway surface and sidewalks. Moving into 2024, this portion of the project will see the installation of benches, landscaping and other public amenities to bring the DARP's vision to life.

Work will occur between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. on Sundays.
