Downtown construction brings first phase of downtown area redevelopment to life

Lloydminster, AB/SK – The vision set within the Downtown Area Redevelopment Plan (DARP) has come to life as Phase 1 of the Central Business District Rehabilitation Program concludes. Adopted by City Council in 2020, this transformative initiative focused on upgrading underground municipal infrastructure and enhancing surface works throughout the downtown core.

Enhanced Pedestrian Experience

The downtown area now boasts a remarkable transformation in the pedestrian experience. Sidewalks have been expansively widened, creating additional spaces for outside business frontages. The modernized crosswalks and intersection "bump-outs" contribute to the aesthetic appeal and significantly enhance pedestrian safety.

In spring 2024, a lush urban landscape will emerge with an increased density of trees, planter beds, and public seating amenities, fostering a more inviting atmosphere.

Business Experience

A well-designed and maintained streetscape attracts more people, benefiting existing businesses and attracting new investments in the downtown area. By providing an enjoyable space for both locals and visitors, a redeveloped downtown fosters patronage of local businesses, potentially boosting economic activity.

Illuminating the Night

A major highlight of the completed project is the substantial increase in the density of street lighting. The downtown core is now bathed in a warm glow, improving visibility and safety for residents and visitors alike.

Downtown Parking

The program successfully modernized roadway travel and parking lane widths, optimizing space. It's essential to highlight that ample parking remains available in the downtown area, with an additional accessible stall located near the corner of 50 Street and 49 Avenue.
