City of Lloydminster to observe National Day of Mourning with commemoration ceremony

Lloydminster, AB/SK—The City of Lloydminster, in partnership with ATCO, the Lloydminster Construction Association (LCA), and the Lakeland Regional Safety Committee (LRSC), will hold a ceremony on April 28 to observe National Day of Mourning. National Day of Mourning, recognized across Canada, is a day dedicated to remembering workers who have died, been injured, or suffered illness as a result of a workplace incident. The day is also a call to action to ensure better workplace health and safety standards. According to the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS), in 2023 alone, 1,057 workplace fatalities were recorded across Canada. In Alberta and Saskatchewan, the combined number of workplace injuries and fatalities continues to rise, emphasizing the need for continued focus on safety protocols.

Event Schedule:

  • 9:30 a.m. – Welcoming and Introduction
  • 9:35 a.m. – Address by Mayor Gerald Aalbers
  • 9:40 a.m. – Signing of the Proclamation
  • 9:45 a.m. – Flag Lowering Ceremony with a Moment of Silence
  • 9:50 a.m. – Announcement of Upcoming Events

ATCO will provide coffee and donuts for attendees following the ceremony.

The City of Lloydminster remains committed to promoting safety and preventing workplace injuries within municipal operations and the broader community. This observance serves as an opportunity to reinforce the importance of workplace safety and remember those affected by preventable tragedies.
