City of Lloydminster to host Fraud Prevention Lunch & Learn on March 24

Lloydminster, AB/SK—With fraud on the rise across Canada, residents of Lloydminster and surrounding areas are invited to a free Lunch & Learn event on March 24 at the Legacy Centre (5106 46 St.). Doors open at 11 a.m., with a presentation at 11:30 a.m., which will take place as attendees enjoy a complimentary lunch.

Fraud and scams continue to be a growing issue, with Canadians losing $567 million in 2023 through various attacks. As technology changes, so do the methods fraudsters use, making awareness an important tool for prevention.

Through the Lunch & Learn event, attendees will:

  • Learn to spot scams and red flags before becoming a victim.
  • Understand the steps to take if you become victimized.
  • Gain insight into fraud tactics used by scammers.
  • Hear real-life stories and personal accounts.

The presentation will be led by Julie Matthews, a certified fraud examiner and consumer protection expert. A former investigative journalist and Global Edmonton’s Troubleshooter, Matthews later served as a peace officer and senior investigator for Alberta’s Consumer Investigations Unit. Now dedicated to fraud prevention, she educates community groups, businesses, and seniors across Alberta and hosts the weekly Scam Alert segment on CFCW radio.

This event is open to everyone and provides practical information to help people recognize and respond to fraud.

Register online at Lloydminster.ca/FCSSEvents or by calling City Hall at 780-875-6184. Registration is required by March 21.
