A Moment with the Mayor: The impact of hosting: how events benefit Lloydminster
In conversations with residents and businesses, the City of Lloydminster’s role as a host for a variety of events frequently comes up. The events we organize range from sporting competitions to the development of new commercial and industrial facilities. Each day, both residents and visitors play a role in supporting our local economy.
Lloydminster is well known across Saskatchewan, Alberta, and even Canada for hosting a multitude of events in agriculture, business, oil and gas, cultural and sporting events, tournaments, gatherings, conferences, and conventions. In most cases, our local hotels, campgrounds, restaurants, and gas stations see a direct positive impact from the extra business generated by these events.
In 2024, our community had the pleasure of hosting a range of events. Some are annual occurrences, while others are more unique occasions. Agri-Visions, for example, is a two-day annual event organized by the Lloydminster Exhibition team that continues to draw large crowds with international speakers and engaging presentations.
This year, the Cenovus Upgrader Turnaround brought thousands of contractors and crews to the Upgrader complex for inspections, repairs, and replacements. Many of us noticed the increased traffic and the significant economic boost it brought.
Over the summer, the Lloydminster Exhibition hosted two chuckwagon events as well as the annual fair, which drew visitors from across Canada.
In July, we had the honour of hosting the Saskatchewan Summer Games. Hundreds of athletes, coaches, and families visited our city, and our facilities were praised, while our volunteers proved to be exceptional. It was a source of great pride to be part of an event that showcased Saskatchewan’s athletic talent.
In September, Lloydminster hosted the Lloydminster Heavy Oil Show, welcoming thousands of attendees, exhibitors, and even provincial and federal politicians. The positive focus on heavy oil and gas was uplifting for the industry, and it was great to see people from across the country and around the world in attendance.
All these events share a common thread: they have had a positive impact—financially and socially—on our businesses and our community as a whole.
