A Moment with the Mayor: Summer events
As I write this article, it’s hard to believe that June 21, the longest day of the year, has passed, and we’re now into summer. We’ve been blessed with lots of rain. It doesn’t always fall when we want it, but the green grass and crops definitely appreciate it.
As this is my last article headed into the summer, I wanted to touch on a number of activities happening in and around our city this summer.
I will start with the late June activities and the June 28-30 Powwow in Frog Lake Cree Nation. Heritage Park here in Lloydminster is open for the summer on weekends until September long. Sandy Beach is hosting a summer market on June 30 starting at 10 a.m.
On July 1, there are celebrations across the area. We’ll gather at Bud Miller All Seasons Park to celebrate Canada’s Birthday. Activities start at 1 p.m. sharp this promises to be a day full of festivities.
July 4-14 brings the North American Chuckwagon Finals to the Lloydminster Ex Grounds. The Lloydminster Fair kicks off with the annual parade starting at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 10. The fair week also includes a free pancake breakfast at City Hall on Thursday, July 11, from 7-10 a.m. If you enjoy airplanes and jets, set your sights on the Cold Lake Air Show scheduled for July 20 and 21 at CFB Cold Lake.
Lloydminster plays host to young athletes from across Saskatchewan from July 21-27. The 2024 Saskatchewan Summer Games are an incredible opportunity for our community and the province of Saskatchewan. If you’re interested in volunteering, we’re looking for many people to make the games a success sign up here: saskgames.ca/summer/volunteers
July 25 is the last day to pay your city property taxes without a late penalty. Please make arrangements through your banking or stop by City Hall before 5 p.m. on July 25. For more payment options, visit www.lloydminster.ca/payments.
You can take in the Extreme Indian Relay Races scheduled for July 27-28 at the Lloyd Ex Grounds.
August will bring an annual event that is a bit further out of town at Mallaig (north of St. Paul) called Haying in the 30s. This event supports those who have cancer and is a free weekend, with events being held August 3 and 4. www.hayinginthe30s.com/
Heritage Day is August 5. Please plan for a great day at Weaver Heritage Park, starting with pancakes and complete with tractors, demonstrations and music. More information is available at www.lloydminster.ca/HeritageDay. The last chance to catch chuckwagons rolls into town is August 14-18 with the CPCA Canadian Professional Chuckwagon Association Finals. Details are available at www.cpcaracing.com.
On September 11 and 12, Lloydminster hosts the Lloydminster Heavy Oil Show. There will always be innovation and information for all. You can find out more information at www.lhos.ca.
If your organization is hosting a community event, I encourage you to share it on the City of Lloydminster’s free online community event calendar – www.lloydminster.ca/calendar.
Christine and I want to wish you a summer filled with memories and laughter.
