A Moment with the Mayor: Streets, roads and byways

Welcome back from a great summer as we start the transition to fall. I had the pleasure to connect with many of you at a number of summer events and gatherings. The city was fortunate to host a number of great events throughout the summer across the city and our surrounding area. Please plan to join us and our sponsors at Bud Miller All Seasons Park for Fall Fest on Saturday, September 16, from noon to 5 p.m. Admission is free for All. I hope to see you there!

A common item of discussion this summer was the construction, namely road or street repair going on around the city. I appreciate the questions and discussions that I had with many of you. I would like to share a quick recap of these many discussions. The city has capital works projects that see major street repairs that include milling of existing failing asphalt and replacing it with a fill of new asphalt. Areas repaired vary in size depending on the size of the asphalt failure and, of course, the available budget. You’ll find areas all over the city seeing these repairs. When we move over to 50 Street, we’re experiencing a complete rehabilitation of the water, sewer and stormwater piping for the entire downtown infrastructure connection point. This involved replacing over 60-year-old piping, installing new pipes and reconnecting all the pieces so that everything would work for existing properties. A new road sub-base, followed by new sidewalks and asphalt, will complete the street. Landscaping and trees will follow subject to weather and mother nature. When we complete a project like this, there are always surprises, especially under the street. Thank you to our contractors, subcontractors and the city team working diligently to complete this project. A big thank you to the businesses and great customers for their continued support during this construction season.

The extensive warranty work being completed by the contractor on Highway 16 west is currently underway and proceeding. This involves milling the top lifts of asphalt and repaving with new asphalt to ensure long life on this major roadway. Thank you to the contractor and their team for getting this warranty work underway and nearing completion. The painting crew will be following along to complete the lines for this project and to get traffic moving again soon!

As always, the question of a bypass around Lloydminster comes up in conversation. I had the pleasure to meet with the Sask. Minister of Highways and our MLA Colleen Young, to discuss this item and other areas of concern. The bypass is not currently on the 20-year plan and we hope to revisit this item and future road improvements. Council and I will continue to advocate for Lloydminster and its needs at every opportunity we get with all levels of government.

Once again, welcome back from a great summer!

Mayor Gerald S. Aalbers
