A Moment with the Mayor: Remembrance Day

At 11 a.m. on November 11, 1918, the guns of the First World War went silent, marking the end of a conflict that shaped Canada’s role on the world stage. Known at the time as “the war to end all wars,” the First World War saw Canadians fight as one nation, with our own generals leading Canadian troops. The victory at Vimy Ridge left a lasting impact on our country, rooted in the courage, strength, and commitment shown by Canadian soldiers.

Since then, Canadians have been called to serve in conflicts and peacekeeping missions worldwide, from World War II and Korea to the Gulf War, Kosovo, and Afghanistan. Each time, young Canadians left home to defend freedom and democracy, many making the ultimate sacrifice. Today, we honour their legacy and ask how we can express our gratitude to those who left behind loved ones to serve.

There are many ways to show our respect. A donation to the poppy fund and wearing a red poppy publicly demonstrates support for veterans. Poppies are available at local businesses, from army and air cadets, and at Royal Canadian Legion branches in Lloydminster, Marwayne, Kitscoty, Marshall, Lashburn, Maidstone, and Neilburg.

Attending a Remembrance Day service on November 11 is a meaningful way to honour those who served. Lloydminster's service will begin at 10:45 a.m. sharp at the Synergy Place Auditorium, located at Lloydminster Comprehensive High School. For those unable to attend, please observe a moment of silence at 11 a.m. to remember those who gave their lives for our freedom.

Finally, remember that voting is also a tribute to our veterans’ sacrifices. On November 13, take the time to vote in the civic election, recognizing that the right to vote was preserved by those who served.
