A Moment with the Mayor: Organics collection

Another change of season has arrived at our doorstep. The transition to every other week curbside collection of the organic waste in our green bin has arrived with the arrival of November.

As the leaves complete their defiant stand and the white stuff begins to collect, we historically significantly reduce organic waste. As a city, we transition to every other week green bin collection until April 1, 2024. Download a copy of the collection calendar at Lloydminster.ca/curbside

I want to remind everyone about what is allowed to go into the green bin:

  • Bones
  • Branches
  • Bread
  • Cat litter
  • Coffee grounds and filters
  • Cold ashes
  • Cooking oils
  • Corks
  • Dairy products
  • Dryer lint
  • Egg shells
  • Fish
  • Grass clippings
  • Grease
  • Leaves
  • Meat
  • Pet waste (bagged, small amounts)
  • Pizza boxes
  • Popcorn bags
  • Produce
  • Rice
  • Sawdust
  • Shredded paper
  • Soap
  • Soiled paper and cardboard
  • Tea bags
  • Tissue
  • Wax paper
  • Wood (small pieces)

Please remember that the lids on each bin must be fully closed, or the service provider will not collect them. Another gentle reminder is that your green bin is not for excess garbage that doesn’t fit in your grey bin. The green bin is to help us free up space in the landfill, which will allow the long-term capital investment of a landfill cell and a greater lifespan, reducing our long-term costs. This can only be accomplished with the support of each one of us. If the green bins are contaminated when they are picked up, they may result in the entire load being sent to the landfill rather than the green bin destination.

With hunting season upon us, I also want to remind everyone that animal carcasses do not go in the organics bin. Although animals eventually decompose, they are too large for the processing facility. If you’re going to dispose of carcasses at home, please use your grey (garbage) bin.

Additionally, we know that after Christmas is celebrated, there will be the Christmas tree pick up scheduled for January 8-12, 2024. Trees can also be taken directly to the Lloydminster landfill.

In-town residential wastes are accepted for free upon showing proof of residence. Documents or IDs accepted include driver's licence, water or utility bill, vehicle registration, or any proof of identification with Lloydminster address. Various fees are collected for commercial dumping and non-resident drop-offs.

Our efforts as residents are critical to the success of our compost and recycling programs! Thanks!
