A Moment with the Mayor: Fire & Rail Safety: A Seasonal Reminder
What do fire safety and rail safety have in common? Not much, except that this is a great time of year to remind ourselves to think about safety.
Railway safety is not just a once-a-year focus; it requires constant caution. We must keep safety top of mind whenever we cross or are near railway tracks. As Lloydminster continues to grow along the rail lines, the importance of railway safety only increases. Today’s trains have greater capacity and efficiency, resulting in longer and more frequent trains.
We’re all familiar with the train arriving at the most inconvenient times – during the morning, noon, and evening commutes. Timing may be everything, but so is safety. This is why railway awareness is critical. When you hear the bells or see the flashing lights, please obey the signals and be especially cautious at uncontrolled crossings.
I regularly hear from residents regarding train delays and crossing safety. This remains a challenge for our community, and we will continue to lobby both the provincial and, more importantly, the federal government to enhance safety at local crossings. Trains transport goods for our agricultural and energy sectors, foundational industries in Lloydminster, but it’s vital that we all stay safe around the tracks.
Turning to fire prevention, what can you do to prevent fires? Fire requires three things: heat, oxygen, and fuel. By removing or eliminating any one of these, a fire can be extinguished. Please take the time to familiarize yourself with the location and proper use of your nearest fire extinguisher—it could make all the difference.
Smoke detectors are another essential tool in your home or business, alerting family members, employees, or customers in the presence of smoke. Make sure to change your smoke detector batteries and test the detectors twice a year. Always keep combustibles away from heat sources in your basement, garage, or yard. Together, we can prevent fires and learn how to stop them effectively.
Fire safety may seem like common sense, but being prepared is critical.
