A Moment with the Mayor: Community builder

Our community has a long list of people, groups, organizations and businesses who have contributed to making Lloydminster what it is today. Everywhere you look in our community, you can see first-hand the results of countless hours of planning, fundraising and building. Many of these amenities started as an idea or drawing on a napkin and then progressed to finished projects, some even through detailed design work by engineers and architects.

The creation of our city today can be traced back to the dreams of Reverend Lloyd and Isaac M. Barr and the Barr colonists settling on the land we now call Lloydminster. With the support of our local First Nations community and the federal government, the newcomers were able to survive the first few winters and start to build the foundations of our community that we enjoy today. Since that time, Lloydminster has welcomed newcomers from near and far, even from around the world, and we have all come to call Lloydminster home.

One of the organizations that can be traced back to the very early days is the Lloydminster Agricultural Exhibition Association, which had its first fair in 1904. Over time, the Saskatchewan and Alberta agriculture societies serving the community amalgamated into their present form. It’s hard to believe the Lloyd Ex is home to events for young and old, fundraisers for multiple organizations, farm and cattle shows, and they still host an annual fair and chuckwagons. This organization was built on community-minded builders and continues today because of like-minded individuals who come together to make our community a better place to live.

A number of businesses have supported and continue to support our community in numerous ways. Many facilities and amenities exist due to the financial and moral support of individuals and businesses who have stepped up to see their dreams and ideas become realities. All businesses contribute to the life we have here in Lloydminster, from the very first general store to those who have opened a business at any point in our history, serving our community. Our community is made up of people who care. The variety of businesses and innovations that have been developed right here in Lloydminster is impressive. Our community is also renowned for supporting sports through coaching, playing and refereeing. We have conservation programs, educational programming, arts and cultural events and so much more. Without the support of our volunteers and businesses, we as a community would not have the diversity and ability to attract and retain skilled community contributors.

Every person who helps make our community a better place to live is a community builder. Thank you for all that you have done and do every day to make our city what it is today!

Mayor Gerald S. Aalbers
