A Moment with the Mayor: Christmas in our Community

As I began writing this article, I glanced outside and noticed the Christmas season has truly arrived. Decorations and lights are all around us, brightening the short days and long nights, thanks to the efforts of neighbours and businesses. The snow has made this year especially memorable for all ages.

For many, Christmas is a season of cherished traditions—baking recipes that only make an appearance once a year, attending staff gatherings, and preparing for celebrations with family and friends arriving from near and far. For children and adults alike, Christmas often brings the excitement of presents under the tree and the joy of gathering together.

However, for some, this season can be a difficult time. Many may be facing their first Christmas without a loved one or a dear friend who has passed. My thoughts are with those in our community who may feel alone this Christmas. It’s important to ask ourselves: How can we help those in need this season?

There are countless ways to offer our time, talents, and resources to bless others. Many organizations need assistance preparing Christmas hampers and delivering food and presents to families. A small gift—like loose change or a few dollars—can make a significant impact through initiatives such as the Olive Tree or the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign. A simple act of kindness, like visiting a senior at home, stopping by a lodge or nursing home to say hello, or sharing a coffee, can brighten someone’s day. As Christmas approaches, if you have room at your table, consider inviting someone who may need a place to belong.

While many are celebrating, I also want to remind everyone to stay safe. If you plan to have a drink or two, please don’t drink and drive—take a cab or call a friend instead. RCMP and Peace Officers will be out in full force to enforce these laws and help everyone make it home safely.

As my family prepares to gather and celebrate the birth of Jesus, I want to extend a heartfelt Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from our growing family to each and every one of you. I truly hope 2025 brings blessings to our residents, businesses, and the entire community.
