FOG Cups
FOG (fats, oils and grease) Cups are provided by the City of Lloydminster to help residents properly dispose of cooking byproducts. More information on what qualifies as an undesirable substance can be found on the Flushables and Unflushables page.
If you would like to take home a few FOG Cups, please contact the Communications Department.
How to use a FOG Cup?
By using a FOG Cup to properly dispose of harmful materials, you can make a positive impact on our Wastewater Treatment Plant, Sanitary Sewer System and the North Saskatchewan River.
Steps One and Step Two of the process are interchangeable! Residents can place already cooled FOGs or liquid FOGs into the cup!
Step 1: Cup It
Place your hot, or cold fats, oils and grease products into the cup!
Step 2: Cool It
Place the cup, with your liquids inside, into your fridge or freezer to ensure they remain at a solidified state. When the cup is full move onto step three!
Step 3: Recycle It
The FOG Cups are made of recycled materials and are 100 per cent biodegradable. This means that these materials, along with the substances inside of them, can be placed into your green organics recycling bin! By placing the cups into your organics bin, you are helping keep our Wastewater Treatment Plant, the Sanitary Sewer System and the North Saskatchewan River clean!
Have grease, but not a FOG Cup?
Many take-out food or beverage containers can be used as FOG Cups. As long as the materials your container is made of is an approved green bin product, if can be used to recycle your used fats, oils and grease products!
Some of these improvised containers may include:
- Take-out coffee cups from fast food and beverage chains such as Tim Hortons, McDonald's, Second Cup and Starbucks are considered excellent substitutes to FOG Cups. These cups are made from paper and have a thin polyethylene or plastic coating, which helps keep the liquids inside of them.
- Fountain pop or soft drink cups from numerous fast food restaurants are also considered FOG replacement cups. These cups are also made from paper and can be recycled in our green organics bin program.
If you are unsure if your cup or container can be used as a substitute please, check the label to ensure it is biodegradable.
