2013 Municipal Census: City of Lloydminster population increased

The City of Lloydminster’s total population is 31,483, according to the results of the 2013 Municipal Census, which marks an increase of 3,679 residents from 2011. Of the 31,483 residents who call Lloydminster home, 20,011 reside in Alberta and 11,472 live in Saskatchewan.

The 2013 Municipal Census was initiated on Monday, April 1. Over 12,000 letters containing a unique eight-digit PIN were delivered to Lloydminster households. Residents could respond to the census online or with the assistance of an enumerator. The online feature was utilized by 4,639 households, which equates to 37 per cent of respondents. Twelve enumerators collected information from 7,981 households, for a total of 12,620 residences, by Friday, May 24.

“Thank you to everyone who participated in the 2013 Municipal Census. We are thrilled with the online response from residents as this was the City’s inaugural year for this process of data collection,” said Beth Kembel, City Clerk. “Up-to-date census data will enable the City to plan for the community’s needs and future growth, and receive accurate per capita provincial grant funding.”

The census asked residents about the number of people residing in the household, the gender and age of each resident, homeownership and the number of registered vehicles associated with the address.

The results of the 2013 Municipal Census were revealed during the Monday, Sept. 9 City Council meeting. The City’s Planning & Engineering team is currently analyzing the census data collected and will provide a detailed statistical report in the coming months.

According to the 2009 Municipal Census, Lloydminster’s population increased from 25,523 in 2007 to 26,502 in 2009, representing a 3.84 per cent increase. Lloydminster grew by 15.7 per cent between 2006 (24,028) and 2011 (27,804), according to Statistics Canada.

The total cost of conducting the 2013 Municipal Census was $47,856.61. Funds for this process were included in the 2013 budget.
