The Lloydminster Fire Department and the Lloydminster RCMP are renewing an old rivalry in advance the 2017 ‘Battle of the Badges’ Todd Gustavson Memorial Hockey Tournament. The annual exhibition game will take place at the Centennial Civic Centre on Friday, March 10, 2017. With just one month until puck drop, leaders on both sides say their squads will be training intensively, while also supporting ticket sales for the popular community fundraiser. "Our Fire Department members are hungry for redemption after last year’s narrow defeat," said Fire Chief Jordan Newton. "We look forward to be another competitive, entertaining showdown. All in attendance – except the opposing RCMP members – will come away with some fond memories." Inspector Neill Pearson has looked forward to the 2017 Battle of the Badges since taking charge of the Lloydminster RCMP detachment in December 2016. "Our members are still riding high on last year’s epic victory," said Insp. Pearson. "The Battle of the Badges trophy has been an attractive addition to our detachment décor and we are prepared to defend our title." The 2017 Battle of the Badges will be featured as part of the Roger’s Hometown Hockey weekend. Rogers Hometown Hockey celebrations include a free community festival in downtown Lloydminster on the corner of 50th Avenue and 50th Street on March 11 from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 12 p.m. until 8 p.m. Battle of the Badges tickets can be purchased at the Lloydminster RCMP Detachment / Public Safety Office (5106 44 Street), or City Hall (4420 50 Avenue). Individual tickets - $10 Four-person family passes - $25 All proceeds will support the Lloydminster and Area Drug Strategy and the Olive Tree. Sponsors for the 2016 Todd Gustavson Memorial Hockey Tournament include: Musgrave Agencies – first period sponsor Redhead Equipment – intermission sponsor Lloydminster & District Co-op – second period sponsor
